Artificial intelligence (AI) is a security industry term that is now so broadly and loosely applied, it's become almost meaningless. Now that every product boasts AI capabilities, security decision makers are becoming cynical, even in the face of the most exciting innovation shaping cybersecurity today.

The concept of artificial intelligence (AI) has been with us since the term was coined for the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence in 1956. Today, while general AI strives for full cognitive abilities, there is a narrower scope—this better-defined AI is the domain of machine learning (ML) and other algorithm-driven solutions where cybersecurity has embraced AI. SANS recently conducted a survey of professionals working or active in cybersecurity, and involved with or interested in the use of AI for improving the security posture of their organization. Read their report to learn their survey findings, conclusions, and recommended considerations.

The Sydney Opera House is one of the world’s busiest performing arts centers and Australia’s number one tourist destination. Each year, it attracts more than 8.2 million visitors on site and stages more than 2,000 performances attended by over 1.5 million people. Since opening its doors in 1973, the Opera House has become the symbol of modern Australia and the country’s premier tourist destination, with an iconic national-identity value that Deloitte Access Economics has estimated at $4.6 billion. On the Opera House’s 40th anniversary, it embarked on a Decade of Renewal, a series of projects to prepare the Opera House for future generations of artists, audiences, and visitors. Because renewal isn’t just about the building and the arts; it’s also about renewing technology and systems. This enabled the Opera House to engage VMtech and BlackBerry Cylance to modernize its IT server and network infrastructure, as well as information management, privacy, and cybersecurity.

Disaster Recovery Plan Roadmap Learn how automatic backup delivers guaranteed business data protection and recovery—no matter the threat. When ransomware hits, the average small business experiences two full days of downtime. One-third of businesses lose revenue and all experience brand and loyalty damage that’s harder to quantify. To stop the bleeding, most small businesses end up paying at least $2,500 to get their data back. But paying the ransom doesn’t guarantee anything. Plenty of businesses have fully complied with the ransom demands, only to have the ransomer increase the ransom request—or simply take off with the ransom and the data.

Affecting over 200,000 machines in more than 150 countries, the ransomware known as Wanna Decryptor, or “WannaCry,” became the largest cybersecurity attack in history in May 2017. The malicious software locked out users from critical data, and demanded a ransom payment to unlock the contents. Governments, hospitals, and corporations scrambled to address the attack and prevent the infection from spreading. Ironically, the virus’ execution method was simple: it exploited a vulnerable Windows SMB protocol to spread – an exploit Microsoft had addressed two months prior to the attack with the release of a patch.

There is one certainty with cybersecurity and that is nothing is certain. Take for example the role the endpoint plays in keeping an enterprise secure. While many cybersecurity professionals are relatively certain that endpoints are locked down and security policies are being enforced, the simple fact of the matter is that endpoints prove to be the root of most compromises. System vulnerabilities, ransomware, malware, intrusions, and other malicious activities are on the rise, showing that today’s cybersecurity professionals are hard-pressed to keep enterprises secure. Although threats are growing in sophistication and attack vectors are expanding, many of the intrusions and cyber attacks happening today are simply a result of improper protections being put in place, systems going unpatched, or weak security policies. While much of the blame is being placed on cybersecurity professionals, the real blame should often be placed upon the tools and policies that many of those professionals have come to trust and the complexity that comes with them.
