This eBook offers a practical hands-on guide to analyzing and mitigating the risks of migrating to PostgreSQL. With the ongoing shift towards open-source database solutions, it’s no surprise that PostgreSQL is the fastest growing database. While it’s tempting to simply compare the licensing costs of proprietary systems against that of open source, it is both a misleading and incorrect approach when evaluating the potential for return on investment of a database technology migration. A key decision criteria for adopting any technology is whether it can support requirements for existing applications while also fitting into longer term strategies and needs. The first section of this eBook provides a detailed analysis of all aspects of migrating from legacy and commercial solutions to PostgreSQL: ? Schema and code migration ? Data migration ? Application code migration ? Testing and evaluation

MongoDB is an open-source, document database designed with both scalability and developer agility in mind. MongoDB bridges the gap between key-value stores, which are fast and scalable, and relational databases, which have rich functionality. Instead of storing data in rows and columns as one would with a relational database, MongoDB stores JSON documents with dynamic schemas. Customers should consider three primary factors when evaluating databases: technological fit, cost, and topline implications. MongoDB's flexible and scalable data model, robust feature set, and high-performance, high-availability architecture make it suitable for a wide range of database use cases. Given that in many cases relational databases may also be a technological fit, it is helpful to consider the relative costs of each solution when evaluating which database to adopt.

Knowledge and strategic relationships fuel many organizations in today’s rapidly changing, global economy. As such, organizations need to leverage the individuals—and their networks—that possess the most relevant knowledge, whether they are current employees or are only loosely connected to the organization. To do this, organizations should create and leverage peer collaboration networks that enable them to identify and connect with individuals who have the unique skills, knowledge, and capabilities these organizations need. Bersin’s Research, Why Reputations and Networks Matter in the Open Talent Economy, indicates that this approach works in driving value—organizations that have effectively used internal reputation networks and profile databases have been able to increase key metrics such as employees’ time to productivity and innovation levels.

Since the SQL Access Group created the Call Level Interface, ODBC has become the most ubiquitous method for connecting to relational database sources. ODBC was developed to allow programmers to access relational data in a uniform manner, regardless of the database backend. ODBC translates those generic commands into the specific esoteric commands of the database backend, so the quality of the driver directly determines the performance of the database connectivity layer. Modernize your applications quickly Many organizations are finding their legacy technology to be inadequate due to its rigidity and high costs. In search of more flexible and cost-effective solutions, many are turning to the cloud. Most Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), however, still build their solutions on commercial databases that are expensive and time-consuming for their customers to deploy and maintain. This is a significant undertaking that can hinder adoption. To address these challenges head on, ISVs can modernize their applications on Amazon Aurora, a database offering from AWS that combines the reliability and performance of commercial databases with the cost-effectiveness and flexibility of open source solutions. In this webinar, you will learn how Virtusa, an AWS Partner Network (APN) Premier Consulting Partner, can accelerate your application modernization journey and help you grow your business. In the time it took you to download and open this eBook, you could have spun up and configured hundreds of virtual machines in a public or private cloud, deployed your application, database, middleware, messaging, load balancers, storage, and other components to those configured servers, linked them all together, and had your app live in production - all with a single click. This isn’t the future we’re describing, it’s right now, and thousands of development teams around the world are doing it. At a high level, we’re describing automation that cloud and APIs enable, and at a low level, we’re describing the outcome of adopting a DevOps mentality and the associated tools. This eBook will look at the basics of DevOps automation, and configuration management to get you started down the right path.
