Before turning to AutoMate, nightly processes were performed by running a mish-mash of batch processes manually after work hours. Even though banks typically close at 4 or 5pm, there is a lot that happens at night to get ready for the next business day. A typical night consisted of 1 or 2 persons staying until 10 or 11pm to make sure all the nightly operations, backups, file transmissions, etc. were finished and validated.

Banks have been using credit scoring models for over five decades, so managing the life cycle of models is nothing new. Most have had some kind of process in place to ensure the models they develop are robust, validated and monitored from a performance perspective and that decision makers have confidence in them. In recent times, however - partly in response to the credit crisis in 2008 - the discipline of model risk management (MRM) has become more formalized and rigorous, driving the need for enterprise-level model information management systems. The regulatory scrutiny being applied to them is intensifying and spreading globally, with US and European regulators leading the charge. For example, whereas regulators were previously more interested in the numbers they were provided, now more regulators want to have a core understanding of the models banks used to generate these numbers.

Many security-minded organizations utilize code signing to provide an additional layer of security and authenticity for their software and files. Code signing is carried out using a type of digital certificate known as a code-signing certificate. The process of code signing validates the authenticity of legitimate software by confirming that an application is from the organization who signed it. While code-signing certificates can offer more security, they can also live an unintended secret life providing cover for attack groups, such as the Suckfly APT group. In late 2015, Symantec identified suspicious activity involving a hacking tool used in a malicious way against one of our customers. Normally, this is considered a low-level alert, however, the hacktool had an unusual characteristic not typically seen with this type of file; it was signed with a valid code-signing certificate.
